They bravely fought against the ambitions of the enigmatic but mad, timeline-altering Romulan, Nero, followed not so long after by the almost overwhelming mental and physical abilities of the thawed-out eugenics superhuman, Khan. Now the gutsy, if still a little reckless Captain James T. Kirk (played with a drive by Chris Pine to match that of William Shatner's), the logical Mister Spock (Zachary Quinto- a worthy successor to the much-missed Leonard Nimoy), and his youthful and surprising crew of Starfleet's finest starship, the U.S.S. Enterprise, find themselves in a whole new realm of danger at the other end of the universe- their once blistering confidence and enthusiasm as galactic explorers within an all-new five years mission into the stars now seeing them isolated, vulnerable and truly on their own against a whole new alien species that doesn't take kindly to trespassers, as the third film in the revitalised and genuinely modern popcorn audience luring STAR TREK series - STAR TREK BEYOND - beams into cinemas this July.

Prior caught in limbo exhaustion, its films never properly given the production budgets and support they deserved, J.J. Abrams brought a modern appeal, certain emotional depth and heaps of fun back to the revived cinematic franchise back in 2009 in his first epic outing playing with the unique characters and toys of Gene Roddenberry's acclaimed universe, then brought further action adrenaline excitement whilst pumping up the threat levels and character conflict with his sequel, INTO DARKNESS, in 2011. Justin Lin, a slick visualist in his own right, a key contributor to the success of the popular THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS films, a key friend of Abrams, now takes the director’s chair of STAR TREK BEYOND- and having been a huge fan of the series since childhood- will hopefully turn the potential worries of a script written, and re-written, by a collective team of five authors (always a bad sign!) into something exciting, memorable and, above all else, worthy of the TREK legacy for this year's impressive Fiftieth Anniversary. The idea of finally seeing the characters at the start of their original five-year mission is a noteworthy one, and we're sincerely hoping that the core troika of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, so beloved from the original series, finally cements itself with actors Pine, Qunto and Karl Urban, though not to the point of stopping the series key support in Zoe Saldana's Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and John Cho as Sulu, from getting equally deserved strong material of their own. Lin's impressive, heavy-hitting casting of LUTHER star Idris Elba as the new film's bulky alien villain, Krall (looking rather like BABYLON 5's intimidating Ambassador G'Kar!), will hopefully adding further weight, alongside a striking, and rather nifty, new wardrobe look for our heroes and their Federation technology.

That “Final Frontier” of human adventure, endurance and emotion does indeed beckon as STAR TREK BEYOND arrives in US cinemas from July 22nd, 2016. And let’s hope that, like the STAR WARS saga itself, this franchise’s unique all-new journeys continue for a good while yet…
